Third Active Implants Assembly brings Europe's AIMD experts together in Mechelen
Building an Active Implantable Medical Device (AIMD) is an exercise in trade-offs. A larger battery can extend device lifetime, but increases size. Wireless connectivity creates new possibilities, but introduces cybersecurity requirements. New functionality can improve patient outcomes, while adding complexity to development and regulatory approval. These are the kinds of challenges that rarely have a single right answer. They demand expertise from multiple disciplines and, often, multiple organisations.
That is why Comate created the Active Implants Assembly: a non-commercial gathering where people working on active implants can openly exchange experiences, discuss technical challenges, and learn from one another. Hosted by Cochlear at its Mechelen offices, the third edition brought together 40 CTOs, R&D leaders, researchers, and technical specialists from across Europe.
A community built around shared challenges
The Active Implants Assembly continues to attract organisations from across the active implant ecosystem. Device manufacturers, technology providers, research institutes, and specialised engineering partners all face different challenges, but many of the same fundamental questions.
- How do you design for reliability over a device's lifetime?
- How do you balance innovation with regulatory requirements?
- How do you make systems smaller, safer, and more convenient for patients without introducing new risks?
Those questions formed the backdrop for a day of open discussions and expert presentations.
We want to bring medical innovation to patients faster. By bringing together experts and researchers, we stimulate collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Apply for a seat
One of the defining characteristics of the Active Implants Assembly is its closed-door format. Participants openly discuss technical hurdles, development decisions, regulatory questions, and lessons learned from real-world projects.
Those conversations often contain the kind of practical knowledge that never appears in scientific papers or conference presentations, yet can have a significant impact on future projects.
Participation is limited and curated to ensure high-quality interactions. Please complete the form below to apply for the 2027 edition.
