CoMoveIT Intelligent wheelchair steering system
Challenge
The advanced steering technology – originally developed as a research project at KU Leuven by Professor Elegast Monbaliu (Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences) – was designed with one clear goal: to offer people with severe motor impairments more freedom and control. Existing systems didn’t meet the needs of users with involuntary or unpredictable movements, such as those with cerebral palsy.
Solution
The smart head/foot steering system for electric-powered wheelchairs, developed by CoMoveIT in collaboration with our team of engineers and the creative people at Voyager, turns an ordinary powered wheelchair into a life-changing mobility device for people with complex movement disorders as they gain maximum independence in terms of mobility. The smart product from the KU Leuven spin-off uses sensors and artificial intelligence to adapt to the user's ability.
Deliverables
Henry van de Velde Award
The CoMoveIT Smart won a prestigious Henry van de Velde award. This award makes a real difference. It puts the product in the spotlight and emphasizes the importance of design within the healthcare sector. Also people with severe disabilities value a user-friendly and beautiful refined design on top of the necessary functionalities.
